Twitter is a newfound addiction of mine—I peruse my newsfeed and post tweets regularly now. Prior to my internship here at Slingshot SEO, I wasn’t nearly active enough, but it’s a massively important social media outlet worth my attention. As a relatively new user, my tactics for effectively using Twitter weren’t fully realized until I began speaking with coworkers who are pros in this arena. They gave me several pieces of good advice to help me manage my profile, as well as the content I publish on it–and I’d like to share that advice with you.
Identify Your Passion
If you’re an inbound marketer, it’s probably a safe bet that you’re also an avid advocate of everything related to the industry—content marketing, social media, email marketing, tracking analytics and more. So, it makes sense to tweet content about related topics and issues. But if you find one of your greatest passions revolves around an area within a different field or a field you aspire to enter, then that field should be a large focus of your Twitter profile. For example: fashion plays an important role in my life, so I shifted my focus to the fashion industry, in addition to my love of marketing. The benefit to this is that having a narrow focus on your profile can better identify you as a thought leader within your area of interest or career and can help you develop the community you wish to have.
Follow Experts in Your Field
Once you determine how best to position yourself on Twitter, it’s important to connect with other industry experts and influencers. You can do this by following suggested people on your home page, related people who are followers of those people you already follow, authors of articles or blog posts you tweet or subscribe to and companies within your industry or field. Having these ties creates a collaboration of ideas and builds relationships—it’s a great way to network online with others who share your passion.
Create and Engage
Finally, encourage these relationships through interaction and engagement with your followers and those you follow. A good standard to abide by is the rule of thirds: one-third tweeting your own content, one-third tweeting other people’s content and one-third interaction. For your personal profile, the first component—your own content—includes Instagram photos, updates about things happening in your life and tweeting at friends. Your own content can provide a personal touch to your profile, since you’re a tangible person, not a tweeting marketer robot. Be sure to remain genuine and fresh in these tweets.
Secondly, tweeting others’ content is where your passion comes into play. You should post relevant articles, videos and photos from reputable sources that relate to your industry or field focus. When you do this, include Twitter handles of the authors and the publishing company in your tweet with links, (for example: “by @bufashionista” or “via @SlingshotSEO,”) which will allow you to connect with experts. This increases your credibility and can expose you to new followers, and it does the same for the mentioned content contributors and publishers. Also, keep in mind that content you post from other sources should include your own opinions and thoughts. Don’t just tweet the title and mentions! That’s impersonal and generic. You’re an individual, so your tweets should reflect your individuality.
Finally, retweeting, favoriting or replying to other tweets is the third essential practice of Twitter engagement. Reach out to your followers and those you follow by retweeting posts you found helpful or enjoyable, by favoriting, by replying with an articulate response and by mentioning in your tweets. Doing this regularly will build your community, create social value and develop you as a genuine and knowledgeable thought leader.
You’re the face of your own company, and you should represent yourself in a way that compliments your industry and your passions. Be sure to first identify what your passion is and how you would like to position yourself on Twitter—use this as a starting point for the type of community you want to build. Then, follow and interact with experts and like-minded individuals. Lastly, manage your content based on the rule of thirds. Adhering to these best practices can aid in developing your Twitter presence and move you from a novice to an expert user.
